Clinical Hypnotherapy & Counselling

What is Hypnotherapy

Clinical Hypnotherapy is the use of Hypnosis by a trained therapist, to create and supply a suitable environment and instruction, allowing a motivated client the focus of mind and body – at which point by way of agreed suggestion (or therapy), behaviours and/or conditions can be modified to achieve the results sought.

What Hypnosis does is bring out the best in you. This for you; means you will change your life for the better, by leaving behind those things which have a negative impact on your life; such as negative thoughts, bad habits and the effects of traumatic incidents – those things you no longer need or want – thereby becoming a stronger, happier, more successful person.

  • Hypnosis is a normal, naturally occurring, healthy state of mind; we experience every day
  • Hypnotherapy is totally DRUG FREE
  • There has never been a single documented case of harm resulting from the use of Hypnotherapy
  • When in Hypnosis, the client is both conscious & aware of their surroundings
  • People will NOT do or say anything while in Hypnosis that they would not do when not in Hypnosis
  • ALL Hypnosis is self-Hypnosis – you cannot be hypnotised against your will
  • Strong willed people are excellent candidates for Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a ‘state of mind’. It is roughly ½ way between sleep and awake, whereas the body and mind are relaxed. It is a state of mind where one can:

  • Imagine things more clearly
  • Concentrate more effectively
  • Hear their surroundings, yet not be disturbed by them

A trained Clinical Hypnotherapist is able to ‘by-pass’ the Critical Factor (or critical faculty) which enables accessing the Sub-Conscious mind, which is where the changes you seek are able to be made.

Conscious Mind

The thinking, doing mind

Critical Factor

The area in between the conscious & sub-conscious mind

Sub-Conscious Mind

The area of the mind where you are able to change the dialogue for improvements

For positive, rapid & lasting results in all areas of health, wellbeing & personal achievement

Why choose Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is about training the mind to match your thoughts and beliefs with your true ability. The subconscious part of the mind contains our fundamental thoughts, beliefs and convictions, which our behaviours stem from. Our subconscious mind is always at work, but we are often unaware of this. This part of the mind contains our self-limiting or self-defeating beliefs as well as our true aspirations, intuition and mental drive. Our moments of insight, wisdom and creativity all come from within the subconscious mind.

What does it feel like

Hypnosis feels like a deeply relaxed state. During Hypnosis, you can hear the Hypnotherapist very clearly. In fact, your sense of hearing is 300 times more alert than when not in Hypnosis, therefore you are able to hear such things as a dog barking quite a distance away, yet it will not bother or distract you. You are able to communicate with the therapist should you wish whilst in Hypnosis. Hypnosis is often referred to as a ‘mind awake, body asleep’ state, as although you are physically and mentally very relaxed and almost sleep like, you are in fact extremely mentally alert.

Frequently asked questions

How successful is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is very successful for most changes sought when the client has made ‘a definite decision’ to make the change(s).

Who can be Hypnotised?

Hypnosis is a completely natural state of mind. Anyone can achieve hypnosis as long as they are receptive to receiving hypnosis and desire the changes sought.

Who cannot be Hypnotised?

Those who choose NOT to be hypnotised cannot be hypnotised, as the client has free will and is both conscious and in control during a hypnotherapy session, therefore are able to reject hypnosis should they choose to do so.

Who are the best subjects for hypnotherapy & what is required to achieve it?

The more intelligent a person is, the more receptive they are to achieving hypnosis in a clinical environment.  Those who are committed to changing their situation and have a reasonable concentration level are suitable.

When should hypnotherapy NOT be used?

Hypnotherapy is deemed unsuitable, therefore not used in Haberfield Hypnotherapy Clinic for those who suffer from Schizophrenia, bi-polar, any psychotic disorder or for those whom suffer from diabetes.

How many sessions are required?

Each person’s needs are individual and the severity of problems brought to clinic varies considerably. Most singular changes require 4-5 sessions for completion, although most do experience a significant change after the first session. However, the follow-up sessions are necessary to compound the suggestions given – which in turn produces the permanence of change. A little like using affirmations, but giving it strength and longevity at a sub-conscious level for rapid change and permanence.  Should you have several differing changes you desire addressing, you would be encouraged to prioritise them, as different subjects require addressing separately to give clarity and avoid confusing the sub-conscious mind.

What subjects can be combined in a therapy session?

After extensive counselling & discussion of your goals and desires, personalised therapies are written to your specific needs and requirements to enable achieving the end result. Confidence &  ego-strengthening therapies are also given within each session.

What time & effort is required by the client between sessions, to produce the desired result?

As appropriate to the subject immediately being addressed in clinic, handouts, instructions and homework exercises will be given by the therapist to action between each session. It is compulsory for all client’s to practice a ‘relaxation exercise’ daily (supplied at their first session) which takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

Is it possible to not wake up from hypnosis?

No it is not possible to not wake from hypnosis. All therapies used in clinic or supplied for home use have a ‘wake-up’ component. Therapies can also be used appropriate to the circumstances without the wake-up and at times are used with the wake-up absent for such situations as stress management, anxiety, pain control, insomnia & painless childbirth. It is commonplace for a client to be hesitant to wake easily in clinic due to the wonderful feeling it produces to be in hypnosis. Trust your therapist, as they have the tools and knowledge to wake you to meet any time restrictions. Additionally, the body will always naturally drift up from the deep relaxation state of hypnosis and awaken itself.

What guarantee do I have that I will succeed in making the change(s)?

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The therapist creates the circumstances whereby which the client can reach a deep level of hypnosis to enable access to the sub-conscious mind, to lodge suggestions to create change(s). The efforts and level of commitment given to support the end result is in the control of the client.

Does being in a state of hypnosis mean I am unconscious?

No – you are always conscious and cohesive when in hypnosis. Quite to the contrary, when in hypnosis the client’s senses are up to 200 times more alert than when not in hypnosis. In other words, you may hear a dog barking/motorcycle roaring quite some distance away that you wouldn’t usually hear; however, it will not bother or distract you since you are in a very deep state of relaxation.

Is hypnotherapy used with young children?

Absolutely- hypnotherapy is suitable for children aged from around 5-6yrs , dependant on their maturity and concentration levels.  We make somewhat of a game for younger children, such as telling them all about ‘hypno-land’, how it feels and what can be achieved through going there. Children generally build quite an excitement and anticipation about being allowed to sit in the ‘big hypno-land’ chair to experience the journey.

How is clinical hypnotherapy different to what I see on TV?

Clinical hypnotherapy is a very professional commodity, which requires registered therapists many years of training to achieve, continuing professional development to maintain and is used for therapeutic purposes only. Stage hypnosis is for entertainment purposes. The subjects chosen to perform on stage are the extremely keen, outgoing personalities whom are most likely to perform well for the crowd and are receptive to behave in a way which will entertain. One will not do anything when in hypnosis that to them is morally offensive or personality incompatible and that they would not happily do when not in hypnosis.

Can I come to any harm from hypnosis?

Historically, there are no documented records of any harm having come to any person from the use of hypnosis, not from self-hypnosis nor from guided hypnosis – not ever! We naturally experience hypnosis many times within each day eg. day dreaming is natural hypnosis, as is those situations where you are driving along the road and do not recall having passed a particular landmark. These are typical examples of the natural hypnosis we regularly experience.
